High-schoolers returning to in-person classes
Each grade will go back on a phased-in schedule
HADDAM — Regional School District 17, which encompasses Haddam and Killingworth, will be sending high school students back to classes full-time next month on a staggered schedule, officials said.
The news was relayed to parents by Haddam-Killingworth High School Principal Donna L. Hayward. Ninth- through twelfth-graders have been operating on a hybrid model since September, with those in the lower grades attending in person.
In-person learning for secondary school students was delayed in part by the renovation of the fieldhouse and because COVID cases were high in the community and throughout Connecticut, Hayward said in her letter to parents earlier this week.
“We remained in a hybrid learning model with our eye on monitoring case metrics,” Hayward said. “We are now optimistic
about the current conditions, which include COVID-19 metrics improving, decreased positive cases reported at HKHS in recent weeks, the vaccine landscape improving, and the fieldhouse in full use.”
With warmer weather on the way, she said, students will be able to enjoy more outdoor activities and take mask breaks.
“Assuming these conditions remain steady or continue to improve, we are planning a phased approach to full in-person learning five days per week,” Hayward said.
Seniors would return March 15, freshman on March 22, and juniors and sophomores on March 29. “Once each class makes the transition to a full in-person learning model, students will either be fully in person or full remote (as the state requires school districts to have the fullremote alternative in place),” she said.
Seniors no longer will be able to opt for hybrid education after their return dates, she said.

“The mitigation measures that have proven effective in avoiding virus transmission in school will continue to be critically important, especially mask wearing, hand washing, and maintaining social distance as much as possible,” the principal said.
Senior year celebrations will include the possibility of an outdoor prom on campus, a graduation celebration similar to last year’s, and some completely new traditions, such as a music and food truck event, all of which will follow safety protocols, she said.
MIDDLETOWN — Middlesex Community College recognizes students named to the dean’s list for the fall 2020 semester. To earn this achievement, fulltime matriculated students, who successfully completed 12 or more credits in the semester, must earn a grade-point average of at least 3.4 on a 4.0 scale.
In addition, matriculated part-time students are also eligible for the dean’s list with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher.
