UConn lands transfer Juhasz from Ohio St.

UConn’s 2021-22 roster was already shaping up to be among the deepest in the country, and now it’s even more formidable.

The Huskies landed one of the top transfers available on Monday in Ohio State’s Dorka Juhasz.

Juhasz, an All-Big Ten forward, made the announcement on Twitter. The 6-foot-4 post averaged 14.6 points and 11.1 rebounds in 17 games as a junior this season.

With the NCAA granting players an added year because of the disruption of COVID-19, Juhasz will have two years of eligibility remaining as she joins the Huskies.

The native of Hungary is set to graduate from Ohio State this spring, so she will enter UConn as a graduate student.

Juhasz will be joining a team that’s mostly intact after reaching the Final Four. UConn is slated to return nearly its entire rotation, in addition to welcoming a highly touted recruiting class headlined by St. John’s College High School (D.C.) guard Azzi Fudd, the Morgan Wootten Player of the Year.

Both frontcourt starters are back in 6-5 Olivia Nelson-Ododa (12.1 points and 7.8 rebounds) and 6-3 Aaliyah Edwards (10.7 and 5.7), as are projected reserves Aubrey Griffin and Piath Gabriel. Amari DeBerry, a 6-5 post from Williamsville South High School (N.Y.), is among the incoming recruits.

The roster, as it stands now, is at 14 scholarship players, which could make playing time a difficult juggling act for Geno Auriemma. The Hall of Fame coach traditionally keeps his rotation at seven or eight, especially in bigger games.

That said, Juhasz should provide versatility alongside more traditional back-to-the-basket players like Nelson-Ododa and Edwards. In 2019-20, she garnered All-Big Ten honors after averaging 13.2 points and 9.4 rebounds. She was one of three

players 6-4 or taller nationally to hit 40 3-pointers.

Juhasz connected on just

20.3% of such attempts this year, but shot 48.1% overall. She posted a season-high 27 points and 15 boards against Miami of Ohio on Dec. 10. She also missed three games in January

after testing positive for COVID-19.

As a freshman, Juhasz averaged 11.7 points and 9.0 rebounds as she was named second-team All-Big Ten.

Her position coach the past two seasons has been former UConn player Tamika (Williams) Jeter, who joined the Ohio State staff as an assistant in 2019.

“She’s a very bright player,”

Ohio State head coach Kevin McGuff said about Juhasz in a January Columbus Dispatch story. “She knows how to play and she tends to make other people around her better because

she knows how to execute within the offense and either get a shot for herself or somebody else.”
