Fairfield P McLoughlin signs with Mets, joins Guerrera

- By Will Aldam

Trey McLoughlin, one of two Fairfield baseball players to be selected by the New York Mets in the 2021 Major League Baseball draft, officially signed Wednesday.

The senior pitcher hailing from Shelton was selected in the 16th round, making him the third Stag to be selected in the first 16 rounds over the last four years, and the 19th drafted in school history.

“Getting that phone call is always something I dreamed about,” McLoughlin said per fairfieldstags.com. “Every time I go on a baseball field it’s always in the back of my head so actually getting that call was pretty exciting. There was a lot of range of emo

tions. It was everything I could imagine, I was almost speechless in the moment.”

McLoughlin started just five games for Fairfield in its historic season, recovering from an injury several into the season. He struck out double digit batters in two of those five starts.

In his four-year career, McLoughlin struck out 162 batters in 160 innings pitched for a 9.11 strikeout per nine innings ratio, a school record.

McLoughlin will join his Fairfield teammate, Justin Guerrera, in reporting to the Mets affiliate in the Florida Complex League in the rookie-ball circuit.

McLoughlin and Guerrera (a 20th round selection) are the first Stags to be selected by the Mets, and amazingly will continue playing together as professionals.

“Once you get that call it’s exciting and all that but now you realize now is where the real work happens,” McLoughlin said. “I think it comes from growing up in Connecticut and going to Fairfield. Just being at a midmajor school there’s a lot of challenges that come with that, a lot of grittiness. So it’s something that is already in my blood.”
