District set to undergo $2.15M lighting revamp

WATERFORD — The Board of Education has approved a $2.15 million Eversource lighting project that has the potential to save the district over $360,000 a year.

Nicholas Procko, CEO of Eversource subcontractor Resource Lighting and Energy; and Ian Dezen, director of engineering, presented plans to members Aug. 26.

Procko said the company went through every single Waterford school building and analyzed everything, including lighting, boilers, rooftop units, transformers, motors and more, according to the meeting recording. The findings were sub

mitted to Eversource.

“That’s lighting — going and replacing every single fixture we have in here,” Procko said. The new fixtures will be LEDs with a sensor programmed by an app, which can set the level of lighting as well as turn lights on or off at certain times.

Every single transformer in the district will also be replaced, estimated to be a 40 percent to 45 percent savings, according to Procko.

“Eversource is providing $1.162 million toward the $2.1 as a cash amount,” Procko said. “The rest of it, they have a finance program for municipalities. They offer up to a million dollars of electrical bill financing up to a million dollars at zero percent interest.”

The remaining cost for the project is $973,421.99, which will be financed at that zero percent interest rate. The annual savings of $360,000 is more than the predicted electric bill for the finance charge, according to Procko.

After the district pays the project off in 48 months, it will save that sum annually.

Work on the project will be done from 3 to 10 p.m. to limit the interruption to students. The project is scheduled to be done by the end of the year, Procko said.
