UNH marches past Franklin Pierce
Dev Holmes caught eight passes for 149 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the University of New Haven football team opened its season with a 30-14 win over Franklin Pierce on Saturday in West Haven.
Quarterback Connor Degenhardt finished 20 for 33 for 308 yards with three passing touchdowns and a rushing TD. Shamar Logan rushed for 103 yards on 18 carries.
Degenhart got UNH on the board first with a 26-yard touchdown run. Later in the first quarter he connected with Holmes from 33 yards out to make it 13-0.
After Franklin Pierce closed the gap with a touchdown of its own, Degenhart hooked up with Paul Cooper for a 29-yard touchdown pass and gave the Chargers a 20-7 advantage at the half.
In the third quarter, Defgenhardt and Holmes connected again, this time on a 47-yard touchdown strike to make it 27-7.
Franklin Pierce was led by receiver EJ Burgess, who finished with 132 yards on six catches and a touchdown.
