Hospital wins $2.86M in FEMA funds for work during pandemic
MIDDLETOWN — The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be sending more than $11.6 million to the state to reimburse Middlesex Hospital and Yale New Haven Hospital for the additional costs of operating safely and handling increased patient loads during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Middlesex Hospital in Middletown will receive $2,858,714 in federal funding, while Yale New Haven Hospital will get 8,774,012 to cover the increased costs of operating in a pandemic environment, according to a press release.
These include:
⏩ Purchasing personal protective equipment for its front-line healthcare workers, including respirators, N95 masks, medical gloves, surgical masks, gowns, coveralls, face shields and goggles
⏩ Purchasing or renting equipment, such as beds, feeding pumps and freezers
⏩Hiring additional staff to perform COVID testing, diagnosis and treatment
⏩Disseminating public health information
⏩ Paying to temporarily expand facilities
to handle increased patient loads.
The program is an essential source of funding for states and communities recovering from a federally declared disaster or emergency, according to the federal government.
So far, FEMA has provided nearly
$157 million in public assistance grants to Connecticut to reimburse the state for pandemic-related expenses.
