8-foot pet snake loose in East Haddam, official says

- By Liz Hardaway

EAST HADDAM — An 8-foot snake is slithering throughout East Haddam, First Selectman Rob Smith confirmed Thursday night.

The snake was first brought to Smith’s attention when a video of the snake crossing the road in town Saturday night was posted to social media.

Turns out, this boa constrictor is a pet.

“The owner was very concerned about it,” Smith said, especially since the colder temperatures aren’t good for the snake’s health. “It starts to have breathing problems.”

This can cause the snake to lift its head up to breath through its mouth, the owner told Smith, which could cause the animal to look more scary.

The owner is also worried that people might think the 20-year-old snake is aggressive, Smith said.

But she’s not.

“It’s very docile,” Smith said, and the snake has apparently never eaten a live animal.

Anyone who sees the snake should call the East Haddam Animal Control at 860-873-5044.
