McCray, Sacred Heart take down Morgan State

FAIRFIELD — Marques McCray threw for one touchdown and rushed for another and Sacred Heard defeated Morgan State 21-7 on Saturday.

Both teams scored on their opening possession before the Pioneers grabbed the lead with one second to play in the first half when McCray hit Rob DiNota for a 6-yard touchdown.

Sacred Heart (2-1) wrapped up the defensive struggle with a punishing 12-play, 89-yard touchdown in the third quarter, scoring on Malik Grant’s 3-yard run. Grant finished with 125 yards on 25 carries. That drive looked similar to the Pioneers’ opening drive, which covered 85 yards as 13 plays chewed up more than seven minutes. McCray’s 9-yard run tied the game at 7.

A good return on the opening kick set up the Bears (0-2) for Romello Kimbrough’s 1-yard plunge.

Morgan State missed a pair of field goals.

SE Louisiana 56, CCSU 10:

At New Britain, Cole Kelley threw for 444 yards and four touchdowns to help Southeaste­rn Louisiana beat Central Connecticu­t.

Kelley was 25-of-33 passing, and he also rushed for a touchdown. Kelley passed for 338 yards and two touchdowns in the first half to help SE Louisiana lead 28-3. Austin Mitchell topped 100 yards receiving by halftime.

Romelo Williams passed for 148 yards with one touchdown and one intercepti­on for Central Connecticu­t (1-2), which travels to Miami (Fla.) next week to face its second ACC opponent in program history.

No. 24 Bowie State 27, New Haven 13: At West Haven, Ja’ROme Johnson rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown and also threw for 176 yards and a touchdown as the Bulldogs handed the Chargers their first loss.

Shamar Logan and Connor Degenhardt each had a rushing touchdown for New Haven (1-1). Bowie State improved to 2-1.

Wesleyan 21, Colby 5: Thomas Elkhoury caught an 84-yard touchdown pass from David Estevez and Logan Tomlinson caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Ashton Scott to lead Wesleyan to a win in Waterville, Maine.

Moises Celaya kicked a 29-yard field goal to give Colby a 3-0 lead in the second quarter, but Wesleyan scored 21 unanswered points to take control.

Coast Guard 33, Nichols 6: At New London, Jared Colletti and Spencer McMillion combined for 276 yards and three touchdowns to lead Coast Guard to its win.

Colletti, who scored on a 92-yard touchdown run, carried 21 times for a career-high 141 yards while McMillion had a 71-yard touchdown run and carried 11 times for a careerbest 135 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Both teams are 2-1.

Trinity 42, Tufts 28: At Hartford, William Kirby had touchdown runs of 7, 1 and 14 yards and Jonathan Gerard caught touchdown passes of 14, 11 and 18 yards to lead the Bantams

in the NESCAC opener. Matt Crowly led the Jumbo offense with three touchdown passes.

LATE FRIDAY

SCSU 34, Saint Anselm 31: At New Haven, Szymon Gawlick kicked a 27-yard field goal in the final seconds to give the Owls a Northeast-10 Conference win at Jess Dow Field.

Saint Anselm scored on a 51-yard touchdown pass with 1:49 left in regulation to tie the game at 31.

Joe Bernard threw a touchdown pass to Izaiah Sanders in the fourth quarer for the Owls (2-1). Gawlick also kicked a 26-yard field goal in the third quarter.
