DEEP RIVER — Bennett’s Books, a community-focused bookstore in Deep River, is now offering free books to low-income individuals and families.

“Study after study has shown the long-term benefits reading has for kids — it’s absolutely crucial,” founder and owner Colin Bennett said in a prepared statement.

Kids 15 or younger can pick out one free book per week from the children or young adult sections. When they finish it, they are free to keep it, pass it on to someone else, or return so it can be used again, according to a press release.

“Considering how vitally important reading is, we want to do everything we can to encourage reading and to make books as accessible as possible,” Bennett said in the news release.

He said he would like to work with area elementary schools and the local Youth and Family Services, as well as any other agencies or individuals that can help identify students and families that would benefit most from the program.

Parents can ask for an application at the shop for the program. The only information needed is a name, town and birthday.

According to Bennett, the bookstore can currently provide free books to about 25 kids or families. In order to serve more children and families, the business accepting sponsors.

A minimum donation for a full sponsorship is $25, but any amount will be appreciated. Sponsors will get a discount on books they buy for themselves.
