Spanos, four others positive for COVID

- By Paul Doyle

UConn interim head football coach Lou Spanos and four other members of the program have tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss Saturday’s game against UMass, the school announced Friday.

Offensive coordinator/ offensive line coach Frank Giufre, tight ends coach Corey Edsall, senior left tackle Ryan Van Demark and freshman offensive lineman Will Meyer also tested positive. The five members of the program — who are all fully vaccinated — are isolating and “doing well,” the school said.

UConn (0-6) plays at winless UMass Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Amherst, Mass. The Huskies have lost 10 games in a row and their last victory came at UMass in 2019.

Defensive line coach Dennis Dottin-Carter will serve as acting head coach in Spanos’ absence. Spanos was elevated from defensive coordinator to interim head coach when Randy Edsall left the team in September.

Dottin-Carter, in his fifth year on the UConn staff, previously served as Delaware interim head coach for the last five games of the 2016 season.

Two unvaccinated team members were identified as close contacts and immediately quarantined. All others who were identified as close contacts are fullyvaccinated and produced multiple negative tests.
