Historian to lead cemetery walk and talk

EAST HAMPTON — The East Hampton Parks and Recreation walking tour of Lake View Cemetery off Route 66 will take place Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.

Participants will hear about the people who lived in the area and their many achievements. The walk will be led by Kevin J. Tulimieri, a historian and researcher at Nathan Liverant and Son Antiques in Colchester, according to a press release.

He has published numerous articles on the subject of American antiques of the 18th century, as well as his research on Venture Smith’s 1805 gravestone and its carver, John Isham of East Haddam.

The tour will include the Civil War brownstone monument to Jason H. Barton, who was wounded at the battle of Antietam. Barton reenlisted, and was wounded again at Petersburg, Va., which led to his death in August 1864 at 25, the news release said. Tulimieri and members of the Chatham Historical Society will share stories about those buried in the cemetery.

Adults and children are welcome. The walk, part of the recreation department’s “Explore East Hampton” monthly series, will begin with a drive through the cemetery entrance on Summit Street, off Route 66, and near a CVS store.

The tour is expected to take about one hour. Heavy rain will cancel it.
