Bishop’s Orchards to mark 150+1 years

- By Nicole Funaro

Bishop's Orchards in Guilford has been a destination for apple picking and apple cider doughnuts in Connecticut each autumn. Every summer, it's been a spot for outdoor entertainment, farm market shopping and ice cream.

On Saturday, the orchard is commemorating all the roles its played for Nutmeg State residents throughout its more than 150 years in business with a day-long anniversary celebration.

Called its “150th Plus One Celebration,” Bishop's Orchards celebration marking its 150 years (plus an additional year) in business will take place at its Little Red Bar[n] on the Boston Post Road in Guilford. The event — which will be “making up for lost time,” according to the Bishop's Orchard website — will offer a variety of attractions for guests of all ages, including children's activities like face painting, a moonbounce and a petting zoo. Throughout the day, there will also be live music from local bands like Take Two and FB Lily, as well as food and drinks from the Bishop's Orchards BBQ Shed, the Little Red Bar[n] and the Naples Pizza Truck.

Sixth-generation Bishop Orchards family member and COO Sarah Bishop DellaVentura said in a press release that the celebration serves as a “thank you to the community” for its support over the past 150 years.

“As a long-standing family business in our community since 1871, we feel this milestone deserves a party for everyone who supported Bishop's Orchards along the way,” DellaVentura said.

In business since 1871, DellaVentura noted that getting to celebrate Bishop's Orchard's milestone anniversary is not something the founding family takes lightly.

“Most family businesses don't make it beyond the third generation, so to have the sixth generation now running the business is exceptional, heartwarming and rewarding,” she said in a release. “It has taken hardwork, dedication and a love for what we do to make our family business thrive generation to generation.”
