‘Anne of Green Gables’ to be staged

EAST HADDAM — Goodspeed Musicals announces the cast for the world premiere of

“Anne of Green Gables: A New Musical.” The classic story is reimagined as a “lively” folk-rock musical that will entertain audiences of every age, the venue said. The show will run from July 15 to Sept. 4, Wednesday at 2 and 7:30 p.m., Thursday at 7:30 p.m. (with select performanc­es at 2), Friday at 8 p.m., Saturday at 3 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 2 (with some shows at 6:30 p.m.). Fourth of July fireworks

MIDDLETOWN — Middletown’s Fourth of July celebratio­n this year will be held July 2 at Harbor Park and the front lawn of the municipal building at 245 deKoven Drive. The event, with a rain date of July 3, is familyfrie­ndly and typically draws large crowds downtown, the city said. It will kick off at 5 p.m., with live music, family festivitie­s, and food vendors throughout the harbor area and along deKoven Drive. Fireworks begin at dusk. Emblem Club meeting

MIDDLETOWN — The Middletown Emblem Club 452 will meet July 6 in the Crystal Ballroom of the Elks Lodg at 6:30 p.m., with President Pat Valenti presiding. Refreshmen­t hostesses are Janet Amenta and Nancy Pahl. The budget will be among the topics to discuss. Committee updates and any other new correspond­ence that comes before the members will be on the agenda. Members are reminded to donate school supplies for children in the community, socks for veterans and canned tuna for Amazing Grace. Klezmer music show

MIDDLETOWN — The Buttonwood Tree, 605 Main St., is bringing in Michael Winograd & The Honorable Mentshn July 9 from 8 to 10 p.m. “Packed with the energy, passion, and drive that listeners have come to expect from The Honorable Mentshn, (the album) ‘Early Bird Special, delivers the schmaltz-drenched, hard-hitting Klezmer music that your soul craves, and gets you onto the dance floor.” This show features a jazz trio performing music of Thelonious Monk. Parker’s Tangent concert

CHESTER — The Concerts in the Garden Series continues July 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. with New Haven-based Parker’s Tangent, a “fun” group playing all original rock music based on blues and roots sources. The lead singer has been compared to Grace Slick and Nora Jones. “Their original music can be poetic, quiet and touching to bluesy to out and out rocking,” the venue said. Local Girl Scouts awarded

Seven Girl Scouts from across the state were presented with $1,000 Gold Award Scholarshi­ps at the ceremony June 5 in Waterbury. To be eligible, one must be a high school senior or college freshman and have earned the rigorous award by completing an community project with impact. Winners include Libby Riggs of Haddam and Cheyenne Fuoco of Middletown.

Mercy grad scholarshi­p

MIDDLETOWN — Emily Pulvirinti, a 2022 graduate of Mercy High School, received a $1,000 Sal Salafia Community Service Scholarshi­p at the Middletown Elks Lodge 771 June 23. The daughter of Gino and Cari Mae Pulvirinti will pursue a pre-med degree at Union College in Schenectad­y, N.Y. She achieved a GPA of 4.26. “On top of the glowing academic testaments from the counseling department and classroom teachers, Emily actively pursued extracurri­cular activities and devoted countless hours of her time toward community service,” according to the school.

Rummage, bake sale

DEEP RIVER — Deep River Congregati­onal Church, 1 Church St., will have a rummage and bake sale July 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Items for sale will include small Furniture, housewares, linens, books and tapes, gardening items, tools and hardware and toys.
