Francis X. Pupello, Sr. of Hamden, passed away on July 17, 2022 at the age of 86. Known to his friends and family as Frank or Cheech, he was the beloved husband of Gail E. (Chamberlai­n) Pupello, to whom he was married for 55 years. Born and raised in Manhattan, Francis was the son of the late Alphonse J. Pupello and Tina Mortellaro Pupello of New York.

Francis served in the United States Navy for five years, from March 1959 to March 1964.

A devout Catholic, Francis was a founding member of the Church of the Ascension in Hamden, CT. He was active from the earliest days in tasks ranging from helping to carry in the original pews to participat­ing in parish life, and he often served as an Usher and Gift Bearer.

Francis was devoted to his wife and three children. He provided a good home for his family by working for both the CT Limo and Timex Corporatio­n. He continued working even after retirement, as an employee of Walmart, helping to open the new store in Hamden, and working there until April 2013.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Gail; his three children: Kim Pupello ( John Zito) of North Haven, Francis X. Pupello, Jr. (Inez) of

Cheshire, and Christophe­r M. Pupello (Lynsey) Pupello of Prospect; and his cherished grandchild­ren: Zooey and Sebastian, Jaxson and Cayden. He was predecease­d by his two siblings, Marie (Pupello) Secola and Anthony Pupello.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in the Church of the Ascension, 1050 Dunbar Hill Rd., Hamden. Burial will follow with military honors in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven. Calling hours will be Wednesday prior to Mass, from 9:00-10:30 at Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave., Hamden. In lieu of flowers, donations in Francis’s memory may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, Paralyzed Veterans of America, or Boy’s Town.
