What we learned from Tuesday’s games

- By Scott Ericson

The CIAC baseball tournaments began Tuesday across all four divisions LL, L, M and S.

The second round games are scheduled for Wednesday. Here’s the full scoreboard and schedule.

No. 1 goes down... twice

It only took one day for a No. 1 seed to bite the dust as No. 1 Woodland-Beacon Falls went down at home to No. 32-seeded Foran-Milford 3-2 in the Class M first round.

Senior lefty Zach Worzel went the distance for Foran. He struck out eight and allowed two earned runs. Joseph Gaetano,

Vincent Hine and Kyle Viesselman drove in runs as the Lions scored three times in top of the third and once more in the fifth.

Woodland tried to rally and had the tying runner at third in the bottom of the seventh, but Worzel struck out the final batter to advance to Wednesday’s second-round game at No. 17 New Fairfield.

This year’s Lions were the only first-round team to have played in a qualifying game. They Lions defeated Goodwin Tech, 13-0, on Saturday.

Class L also had a No. 1 seed go down as No. 32 Wilton knocked off No. 1 Wilcox TechMeriden, 17-4. Then again, with Wilton coming out of the

FCIAC and Wilcox out of the CTC, it is an upset in seed only.

Wilton will face No. 17 Windsor in the second round Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Long time coming

In, perhaps, the most eyepopping result of the day, No. 13 seeded Hillhouse/Career of New Haven defeated No. 20 Fitch-Groton, 3-2, in Class L.

Hillhouse pitcher Josh Brito got the win in a complete-game effort, allowing four hits and one earned run. The Academics scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the third and advance to the second round where they will play host to No. 29 Masuk-Monroe Wednesday
