Stephen P Chowaniec, “Chewy,” 54, of Middletown, CT passed away on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at Middlesex Hospital, surrounded by close family and friends. Beloved son, brother, cousin, uncle, nephew, neighbor and friend, he was born in Middletown and grew up in Rockfall. He was the youngest son of Henry “Hengie” and Anna Mae (Skiba) Chowaniec, both deceased. He leaves behind sisters Stacy Chowaniec of Bellingham, MA, Susan Chowaniec of Middletown and brother Stanley Chowaniec of Higganum, as well as niece Krista Perry of Worcester, MA, nephews Andrew Perry of Worcester, MA and Shay Peterson of Middletown, currently stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, GA. He loved his family and the multitude of friends he considered family, the outdoors, life, fishing, bonfires and cats. He was an avid gardener, and enjoyed helping people in any capacity. He also enjoyed taking in sunrises, particular­ly at the orchard and also on the mountains.

Stephen was a lift mechanic years ago for Powder Ridge Ski Resort, worked for many years at the CT Dept. of Environmen­tal Protection, Wetland Habitat and Mosquito Management Program out of Madison CT, and more recently worked at Mt. Southingto­n Ski Area. Visitation will be held at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown on Sunday (April 14th) from 1 to 3 p.m. A celebratio­n of Stephen’s life is being planned for later this year.
