On Friday, April 5, 2024, John “Jack” David Heinzmann, Sr., passed away peacefully at his home in Rockport, MA. He was 96 years old. Many knew Jack as the friendly old man who took daily walks around Pigeon Cove and a former member of the Rockport Planning Board.

Jack was born in 1927, in New Britain, CT, to parents Albert and Edith (Paulsen) Heinzmann. Jack and his younger brother, Richard (“Ricky”), grew up in New Britain and nearby Berlin. During WWII, Jack joined the Navy. Afterward, he earned an engineering degree from the University of Connecticut and worked for Raymond Engineering in Middletown, CT.

In 1950, Jack married Jean Hovey Raymond and they had five sons. They lived in Berlin, CT, and spent their summers in Rockport, MA. After Jack’s retirement, he and Jean moved to Rockport full-time, where they often welcomed friends and family to their beautiful home. Jack loved hiking and was an avid vegetable gardener. For over 50 years, he enjoyed flying his single-engine plane. He built his own telescope and was a member of Stellafane, a telescope makers’ club.
