McIlroy to play at Travelers in June
World’s second-ranked golfer hasn’t won major since 2014
Rory McIlroy has committed to play in June’s Travelers Championship, the tournament announced on Tuesday morning.
McIlroy, the world’s secondranked golfer, has won 24 PGA Tour events and four major championships, including the PGA Championship twice. But he hasn’t won a major since 2014. McIlroy’s last PGA Tour victory came at the Genesis Scottish Open last July.
McIlroy joins world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay and defending champion Keegan Bradley among the announced commitments by the tournament, which will be held June 20-23 at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell. It is a Signature Event with a $20 million purse.
“Rory is one of golf’s biggest and brightest stars, winning major championships, tournaments all over the world and leading Team Europe to victories in the Ryder Cup,” Travelers Championship tournament director Nathan Grube said in a statement. “He’s someone who has fans everywhere he plays, and I know he’ll receive strong support this year at TPC River Highlands.”
He most recently tied for 22nd place at the Masters. McIlroy is currently 44th in the FedExCup standings. He is a three-time FedExCup champion (2016, 2019, 202) and a three-time PGA Tour Player of the Year (2012, 2014,
2019). McIlroy, 34, will be playing the Travelers Championship for the sixth time at Cromwell’s TPC River Highlands, the first coming in 2017. He has finished tied for 19th or better every time, with his best finish a tie for seventh last year to Keegan Bradley, who set the 72hole tournament scoring record.
McIlroy commented following his final round last year that TPC River Highlands had become “obsolete” with the new technology.
There were 41 rounds of 6-under-par 64 or better shot during last year’s tournament.
The tournament, as previously announced, has made some minor adjustments to a handful of holes that might impact scoring.
“I have so much appreciation and respect for Rory, who has been a strong supporter of our tournament over the years. He’s become a good friend, someone who speaks his mind and provides suggestions on how things can be further improved,” said Andy Bessette, executive vice president and chief administrative officer at Travelers, in a statement.
McIlroy denied a report last week that LIV Golf had offered him $850 million and an ownership stake.
He reconfirmed his commitment to the PGA Tour. LIV golfers are banned from playing the PGA Tour.
McIlroy’s commitment comes a little later than normal for McIlroy, who normally committed to past Travelers Championships during the winter months and once committed in August — 10 months before the tournament was to be held the following June.
