Report: Huskies will have home-and-home series with Texas

- By Paul Doyle

The reigning NCAA champion UConn men’s basketball team is close to finalizing a plan to play at Texas next season as the first in a home-and-home series with the Longhorns, according to national college basketball reporter Jon Rothstein.

Rothstein reported Tuesday that the Huskies will play at Austin next season and Texas will visit Connecticut in 2025-26. Dates and times are to be determined and the series will reportedly be announced at a later date.

UConn is 7-3 all-time vs. Texas, a series that began in 1991.

The Huskies beat the Longhorns 81-71 in the finals of the Empire Classic on Nov. 20, 2023 at Madison Square Garden. That was the latest in a memorable history between the teams. UConn won at Texas in December 2015, while Texas earned a one-point win at Gampel Pavilion in November 2014. Jonathan Holmes hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to lift No. 7 Texas to a 55-54 win.

Kemba Walker’s 3pointer with five seconds left in overtime gave UConn an 82-81 win at

Texas in January 2011. The Longhorns beat the Huskies in the 2003 Sweet 16 in San Antonio.

UConn is remaking its roster after Donovan Clingan and Stephon Castle declared for the NBA draft, while Cam Spencer and Tristen Newton are out of eligibility. Alex Karaban has also made himself available for the draft while retaining college eligibility.

The program is hosting top-15 recruit Liam McNeeley this week on campus. McNeeley, who previously committed to Indiana before decommitting last month, is from the Dallas area, so a game in Austin will bring him back to his home state should be join UConn.
