The Morning Call (Sunday)

Fullerton Avenue at Dale Street

ALLENTOWN

- roadwarrior@mcall.com Twitter @TShortell 610-820-6161

Description: A two-lane state road in Allentown’s urban core with row homes on both sides. About two blocks north of American Parkway.

Speed limit: 35 mph

A reader suggested I check anywhere on Fullerton Avenue between American Parkway and Route 22. Based on my results, I’m thinking the reader needed to give a more specific location. Spots closer to Route 22 had limited parking, so I focused farther south, where the homes are closer to the road.

For much of my 15 minutes around 3 p.m. Nov. 1, traffic was at a standstill. Between traffic backing up from American Parkway, school getting out and a nearby stoplight and stop sign, there was little opportunity for anyone to speed. I was walking past most vehicles on the road.

This may have been a matter of timing, though. Despite the limited opportunity, I still caught two vehicles going well over the speed limit before congestion really set in. One driver hit 45 mph, which really got my blood boiling since children were walking home and getting off buses.

It wasn’t all bad news, though. This was the only spot where a driver stopped to see if I wanted to cross the road.

?? TOM SHORTELL/THE MORNING CALL ?? While traffic was at a standstill at times at Fullerton Avenue and Dale Street in Allentown, some drivers went through at serious speed.
