PENN STATE REPORT CARD
Penn State dismantled Maryland for the second consecutive year, capping a season of highs and lows with a 38-3 victory Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Here’s the final report card of a 9-3 regular season. OFFENSE: B
Trace McSorley ran with more spark and fitness than he has in weeks, rushing for two touchdowns, throwing for another and contributing to the Lions’ 310 yards rushing, their second-highest total of the year. The passing game struck a few big-play notes (highlighted by Juwan Johnson’s 38-yard catch), and guard Mike Miranda looked sharp in his first start.
DEFENSE: A
Unstoppably disruptive, with 15 tackles for loss and five sacks to hold Maryland without a touchdown for the second consecutive year. End Yetur Gross-Matos is a star, and tackle Kevin Givens was rewarded for his endless grunt work with two TFLs. SPECIAL TEAMS: B
Negligible impact, though a fumbled (and recovered) opening kickoff could have caused trouble. Kicker Jake Pinegar made his 15th field goal and first tackle. COACHING: B+
Defensive coordinator Brent Pry and DL coach Sean Spencer have done wonders with groups freighted by preseason questions. And kudos to James Franklin for giving McSorley a curtain call.
OVERALL: B+
Penn State’s most dominant home performance of the Big Ten campaign.
