Nurse’s aide class information sessions
Northampton Area Community College will hold free nurse’s aide information sessions at 6 p.m. Jan. 9 and 22 at the Fowler Family Southside Center, 511 E. Third St., Bethlehem. Classes begin on Feb. 9.
To register, go to www.northampton.edu/ HealthcareCourses. 15 to 20 people for the 2019 class. The class includes 40 hours of training on various topics, including water quality, stream health, groundwater, native plants and recreational resources.
Once this part of the training is complete, trainees perform 50 hours of volunteer service on selected projects such as organizing and executing stream cleanups, designing and installing demonstration rain gardens, assisting in stream restorations, and organizing educational workshops addressing topics such as rain barrels, pollution prevention, invasive plant control and stormwater management. If under 18, you must be accompanied by a guardian or adult.
Information sessions will be held at 7 p.m. Jan 15 at Forevergreen Preserve, 1539 Cherry Lane Road, East Stroudsburg; 7 p.m. Jan. 17 at Western Pocono Library, 131 Pilgrim Way, Brodheadsville; and 11 a.m. Jan. 19 at Kettle Creek Environmental Center, 8050 Running Valley Road, Stroudsburg. Christopher Boucher of Allentown, a student at King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, recently received a grant for the McGowan Center Student Research Program and will present his research at the Popular Culture Association conference in Washington, D.C., next April. Boucher was awarded the grant through the McGowan Center. He worked with his faculty mentor, Robin Field, on a project concerning the representation of disabled heroes in American literature. They also co-authored an essay that is to be published in a forthcoming volume entitled “Superheroes and Disability.”
Bethlehem Area VocationalTechnical School instructor Jennifer Stilgenbauer was honored as Teacher of the Year at the National Association of Career and Technical Education Conference in Texas. The award is the Carl J. Schaefer Memorial Award.
Indian Crest Middle School has announced that Thomas Alexander has won the SchoolWide National History Bee. The other top qualifiers were, Braden Sigafoos, Max Organek, Joseph Carrasquillo and Matt Andryushin, who along with Alexander will take the online regional exam in January to qualify for the regional finals.
