1962 — Tommy Brooker kicks a 25-yard field goal 17:54 into overtime, giving the Dallas Texans a 20-17 victory over Houston for the AFL title.

1978 — Bryan Trottier has five goals and three assists to lead the New York Islanders to a 9-4 victory over the Rangers. Trottier sets an NHL record with three goals and three assists in the second period.

1982 — Chaminade, an NAIA school, beats top-ranked Virginia and 7-foot-4 center Ralph Sampson, 77-72, for one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history. The game is played at Honolulu's Internatio­nal Center in front of 3,383 fans.

1996 — Barry Sanders of the Detroit Lions rushes for 175 yards in a 24-14 loss to San Francisco to finish with 1,553 yards for the season. It's Sanders' third straight season with at least 1,500 yards rushing, a first in the NFL.

2008 — The Boston Celtics set a franchise record with their 19th consecutiv­e victory, beating the Philadelph­ia 76ers 110-91. The Celtics improve to 27-2 — the best start for a two-loss team in NBA history. The 19-game winning streak breaks the Celtics record set in 1981-82.

QB Jamie Newman ran for a 1-yard TD with 34 seconds left to cap Wake Forest's comeback from an 18-point deficit in a 37-34 victory over Memphis in the Birmingham Bowl in Birmingham, Ala. Newman finished with three rushing TDs and threw for another for the Demon Deacons (7-6). For the Tigers (8-6), Tony Pollard scored on a 97-yard kickoff return to tie the NCAA career mark with seven . ... QB Kelvin Hopkins Jr. ran for 170 yards and an Armed Forces Bowl-record five TDs, and Army routed Houston 70-14 in Fort Worth, Texas. The Black Knights' 56-point win tied the FBS record for largest margin of victory in a bowl game. They finished 11-2, reaching 11 victories for the first time in program history. Houston (8-5) lost for the fourth time in five games. Also, ESPN reported that Kendal Briles resigned as Houston's offensive coordinato­r and will take the same job at Florida State . ... Sawyer Smith threw for 320 yards and four TDs, B.J. Smith and Sidney Davis ran for scores and Troy beat Buffalo 42-32 in the Dollar General Bowl in Mobile, Ala. The Trojans (10-3) recovered three fumbles and had an INT in the victory. Buffalo finished 10-4 . ... Urban Meyer will become an assistant AD at Ohio State after he retires as the Buckeyes coach following the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day, Ohio State AD Gene Smith told The Columbus Dispatch.

NFL: Blaine Gabbert threw a 2-yard TD pass to MyCole Pruitt with 4:30 left, and the Titans kept their playoff hopes alive by beating the Redskins 25-16 in Nashville, Tenn. Gabbert relieved Marcus Mariota, who left in the first half with a stinger. The Titans improved to 9-6, while the Redskins fell to 7-8 after their fifth loss in six games . ... Rookie Lamar Jackson threw for 204 yards and tossed a career-best 68-yard TD to guide the Ravens to a 22-10 victory over the Chargers in Carson, Calif. The Ravens (9-6), who remained in position for the second AFC wild card, forced three turnovers. Tavon Young returned a fumble 62 yards for a score late in the fourth quarter to secure the win. The Chargers, who already had clinched a playoff berth, fell to 11-4.

SOCCER: Jeff Schlupp, Andros Townsend and Luka Milivojevi­c scored to lead Crystal Palace to a 3-2 win over Manchester City. It was City's first home loss in 10 English Premier League matches and left the defending champ in second place, four points back of leader Liverpool . ... In its first match under new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United routed host Cardiff 5-1 . ... ALSO: Mikaela Shiffrin won a World Cup slalom race in Courchevel, France, equaling a women's record with her 35th victory in the discipline and 50th win overall. With the win, Shiffrin tied Marlies Schild of Austria with 35 slalom wins on the World Cup circuit. Shiffrin, 23, is also the youngest of the eight skiers, men and women, to win 50 World Cup races across all discipline­s . ...
