THREE KEY MATCHUPS

-

Eagles OTs vs Bears OLB Khalil Mack

Keeping the All-Pro pass rusher off Nick Foles will be a shared responsibility, starting with Doug Pederson’s protection schemes and run-pass ratio. But eventually the Eagles’ offensive line will have to hold back Mack, who lines up on the left and right side in Vic Fangio’s defense, which means both left tackle Jason Peters and right tackle Lane Johnson will get their shot. Pay close attention to Mack’s inside rush against Peters, who’s playing through a torn right biceps and has struggled occasionally when pass rushers go inside to test his right-arm strength.

Eagles WR Alshon Jeffery vs. Bears CB Prince Amukamara

Amukamara, a Super Bowl champion with the Giants, has revived his once-fleeting career in Chicago, where his toughness and physical play meshes well with the Bears’ style of defense. But the eighth-year corner from Nebraska also can pay the price for playing tightly, as the Packers showed a few weeks ago. Davante Adams toasted Amukamara on a go route and on a deep slant, the kind of routes Jeffery has excelled at recently with Foles trusting him in single coverage. Jeffery has averaged over 100 yards a game in his last three games and has three inches and about 10 pounds on Amukamara.

Eagles TE Zach Ertz vs. Bears S Eddie Jackson

The Bears mix man and zone coverages and sometimes play each coverage within the same formation, so there won’t be just one single defender on Ertz. In fact, the Bears will probably try to double and bracket Ertz and take their chances with others in single coverage. But Bears safety Eddie Jackson has had a phenomenal season and made the Pro Bowl thanks to his ability to close like a cheetah and make plays on the ball. Windows might look open for Foles to connect with his Pro Bowl tight end, but Jackson can shut them quickly. He had 15 pass breakups and two interceptions.
