5 things to know about Dieruff

-

1. Lutte has built a coaching staff that features a mix of veterans and energetic newcomers. “We have Mike Sculley who has been around since the dinosaurs roamed the earth and we have Jeff Brosky, a former head coach at Northampton and then we have a group of young guys who have come up through the system through the East Side Youth Center and the freshman program. Guys like Joel Rupp, Derek Thorne, Eric Collazo, Rocky Wilson and Emani Gill.”

2. The Huskies have a tough early-season schedule starting with a noon game against Bethlehem Catholic at Moravian College on Aug. 24 followed by games against

Northampton and Easton. In Week 4, the Huskies play at Pocono Mountain East, which is coached by Lutte’s longtime friend Rob Melosky. “We know what we’re up against,” Lutte said. “But if we can get through that and stay positive, we really believe we can have a lot of success later on.”

3. The team has used Keck Park as one of its practice fields. The Huskies’ regular practice field near the school on East Tilghman Street is not in good shape. “Keck Park is beautiful,” Lutte said. “The city put up goalposts for us and the field is lined and the grass is cut. There is a Mosser Village Family Center that is in the old pool house that allows us to store our stuff there.”

4. Lutte said he is intrigued by the battle for the starting quarterback job between junior Marc Castro and sophomore Jovan Rodriguez. “They each bring a different skill set,” Lutte said. “Marc is probably a little better passer and Jovan is probably a little better runner. They are dead even now with how they run the offense. We’re going to let it play out through our scrimmage and make our decision the Tuesday before the Becahi game.”

5. Karam Chakif is a right guard and defensive tackle. He’s also a wrestler with a 5.0 GPA and wants to be a mechanical engineer. He is hopes to attend Lehigh University.
