Support police and Black Lives Matter

-

Recently I heard someone ask, “How could anyone be opposed to Black Lives Matter?” I responded that perhaps they feel it’s a way to support the police. But those two things are not in opposition. I have lived in Bethlehem most of my life and I’m very happy that the Bethlehem Police Department is here to protect all of us. I acknowledge that I’m writing, now, as an older white woman who’s never been in trouble with the police. Even from my advantaged position, though,

I can also acknowledge that all lives can’t matter until the lives of those who have been disregarded and disdained are seen to be worthy. We can all be involved in guiding this issue into a fruitful future.

“Black Lives Matter” is a short phrase that can’t possibly express all the nuances of everyday life, but by backing it we can give support to a movement that will bring about a more peaceful future for all, a future where police officers pull errant colleagues back into line so those few don’t ruin the reputation of the whole.
