LV FLASHBACK
A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from Aug. 2. 1987—Michael Andretti wins the first 500-mile Indy car race of his career and the fastest 500-mile race in Indy car history when he averages 171.490 mph to win the Marlboro 500 in Brooklyn, Mich. Michael takes over the lead when his father, Mario Andretti, who built a two lap-lead, is forced to withdraw due to engine failure midway through the race. 1975—Bethlehem’s Debbie Massey wins her second Women’s Western Amateur golf championship in four years with a 1-up victory over Peggy Conley of Seattle in the 36-hole match-play final in Clemmons, N.C. 1960—Allentown is granted one of 12 franchises in the Eastern Professional Football Conference, a proposed minor league with teams in four states. The team, which will be named the Copperheads and coached by Jeep Bednarik, will play its home games at Hess Stadium, the home of the area’s minor league baseball team in the Eastern League on the Seventh Street Pike, just over the city line.
