1993 — Bethlehem Catholic names Easton grad and former Allentown College coach Jim Hutnik as its new boys basketball coach. Hutnik leads the Golden Hawks to its first winning season in 14 years in his first year, and in 12 seasons before stepping down to succeed Dave Lutz at Easton, Hutnik guides the Golden Hawks to a 222-111 record, two District 11 Class 3A title and the school’s first-ever East Penn Conference championsh­ip.

1984 — Coming off a 19-strikeout one-hitter the night before, 43year-old Ty Stofflet endures a 45-minute rain delay and pitches all 17 innings in the Bank of Pennsylvan­ia Sunners’ 5-4 win over the California Kings, keeping the Sunners alive in the loser’s bracket of the ISC World Tournament at Bicentenni­al Park in Allentown. 1969 — Rick Stauffer scatters seven hits and Boyertown beats Chambersbu­rg 3-0 in York to win its first American Legion state baseball title. The Bears advance to the Mid-Atlantic Regional in Coplay.

1963 — A crowd of 14,000 at Bethlehem’s Liberty Stadium watches the Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Eagles 24-13 in the Greater Bethlehem United Appeal benefit preseason game. Eagles quarterbac­k Sonny Jurgensen completes 9-of-10 passes for 92 yards but suffers what’s feared to be broken ribs early in the second quarter; the injury is later downgraded to bruised ribs, and he plays in the following game.
