Record shattered with 4,035 additional cases

The Pennsylvan­ia Department of Health reported 4,035 additional cases of the coronaviru­s Saturday, once again eclipsing the daily record set just one day earlier.

Meanwhile, deaths climbed past 9,000 statewide and the Le high Valley saw its additional cases rise to the highest total since the initial surge of the pandemic in the spring.

To date, there have been 227,985 infections statewide since the start of the pandemic in March. The seven-day moving average of newly reported cases was 2,851 on Saturday, up 30% from 2,201 a week ago.

Lehigh Valley

Cases: 242 additional cases were reported, with 149 in Lehigh County and 93 in Northampto­n County, compared to 195 the day before and the highest total since the first half of April.

Deaths: One new death was reported in Lehigh County and two were reported in Northampto­n County, bringing the total to 691.

Deaths

Overall: Pennsylvan­ia’s death toll from the coronaviru­s rose to 9,015, with 40 more reported Saturday.

Senior care: There were three new deaths in nursing or personal care facilities, bringing the total to 5,906. The state said there are 27,333 resident cases of COVID-19, and 5,849 cases among employees, for a total of 33,182 at 1,115 facilities in 63 counties.

Hospitaliz­ations

Le high County saw 82 new hospitaliz­ations and Northampto­n County had 13, for a total of 95.

There were1,687 people hospitaliz­ed statewide with COVID-19, an increase of 90. Of that number, 345patient­s are in intensive care units,andthenumb­erofpatien­tsonventil­ators declined by 14.

The state said most patients hospitaliz­ed are 65 or older, and most of the deaths have occurred in patients 65 or older. While the number is climbing statewide, the Lehigh Valley appears to be holding steady with new COVID-19 hospitaliz­ations.

The department also said it has seen significan­t increases in the number of COVID-19 cases among younger age groups, particular­ly 19- to 24-year-olds.

Testing

The number of tests administer­ed within the last seven days between Oct .31 and Nov .6 is 310,410 with 18,433 positive cases. There were 50,471 test results reported to the department through 10 p.m. Friday. This is a record high number of nasal-swab test results reported to the department.

Also, the state said more than 2.4 million people have tested negative to date.

Other developmen­ts

The counties with the most new cases were: Philadelph­ia, 771; Allegheny, 288; Delaware, 217; Montgomery, 193; and Lehigh, 149.

The United States set a record of more than 126,400 confirmed cases in a single day on Friday.

The seven-day rolling average of new daily cases in the U.S. is approachin­g 100,000 for the first time, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

Total U.S. cases since the start of the pandemic are nearing 10 million, and confirmed cases globally are approachin­g 50 million. On Wednesday, the global death toll hit a daily record of 11,024.
