The Morning Call (Sunday)

Rescue The Morning Call

-

For an in-hand example of why the Lehigh Valley needs a fully functioning, locally owned Morning Call, look at Sunday’s front page at three in-depth articles which expanded my understanding and appreciation for this area’s philanthropic foundations, the Allentown mayor’s race primary results, and the healing offered through outdoor trail hiking to military veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Then on page 1 of the Sports section, I enjoyed compelling pieces covering top local high school performances in boys and girls track and playoff baseball.

This is what our regional newspaper should be, is now, and ought to remain.

But, will talented reporters still be around to write articles like these once the hedge fund Alden Global Capital starts cutting newsroom staff? That’s what Alden — hell-bent on shareholder profit over community well-being — has done at other papers it has taken over.

Yes, our newspaper’s parent company was sold to Alden, but there is a group of local leaders trying to raise sufficient funds to purchase the paper back. Please join me in pledging a contribution to this mission. Contact Tony Iannelli at the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce: email tonyi@lehighvalleychamber.org; phone 610-7391513.
