LV FLASHBACK

-

A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from June 13.

2005: Brandywine Heights uses three of its four hits off Gina Gurgick to score three runs in the fourth inning and ends Bethlehem Catholic’s bid for a state title with a 3-2 win over the Golden Hawks (15-11) in the PIAA Class 2A championship game. The Bullets (23-4) snap Gurgick’s 39-inning scoreless streak with the rally.

1996: For the first time, the same district produces multiple state softball champions in the same year as Northampton (3A) and Northern Lehigh (2A) capture the gold in Shippensburg. First, Laurie Rentschler belts a tie-breaking two-run double in the fourth inning and the Bulldogs ease past Riverside 6-2 to cap a 26-4 season. Then, Courtney Medea throws six shutout innings, belts a two-run double and keys a three-run fifth inning with a leadoff triple to spark Northampton (26-1) to a 10-2 win over Corry.

1995: Kim Williams throws out the potential tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh inning, preserving a 1-0 win over Chambersburg that sends Parkland into the PIAA Class 3A softball championship game. However, Kutztown’s dreams of a Class 2A title are dashed when the Cougars manage just one hit in a 1-0 loss to Annville-Cleona.

1990: With a resume that includes wins in the Indianapolis 500 and Daytona 500, a Formula One world championship and four Indy car season titles, 50-year-old Mario Andretti is inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.

1985: As she did a week earlier, Northwestern’s Patty Walko fuels lategame heroics in the Tigers’ 4-3 win over Minersville in the PIAA Class 2A softball semifinal. Walko ties the game with a two-out, two-run triple, then scores the winning run on a wild pitch to send the school to its first title game.
