1980: Easton’s Larry Holmes ruins Muhammad Ali’s bid to regain the heavyweigh­t title for the fourth time when he batters the legendary champ enough in their fight before almost 25,000 fans at an outdoor stadium at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. Ali can’t answer the bell for the 11th round. It’s Holmes’ eighth title defense by knockout, breaking Joe Louis’ record for consecutiv­e knockouts in title defenses, and runs his record to 36-0.
