2001: Northampto­n’s Beth Marushak fires a two-day total of 140 to win the PIAA girls golf tournament by three strokes. Whitehall’s Sean Szerencsit­s finishes second in the boys tournament with a two-day

2001: Hoping to lure a big-name manager in an effort to generate enough interest in his team to get public support for a new stadium, team owner Peter

Karoly demotes Allentown Ambassador­s manager Joe Calfapietr­a to bench coach after two years as manager. Calfapietr­a accepts the move but later leaves the independen­t Northern League East baseball team to become manager of Gary, Indiana, in the Northern League Central.

1995: Jim Thorpe’s 22-game Mid-Penn Conference winning streak ends when the Olympians fall 17-6 to Cardinal Brennan. 1995: Southern Lehigh wins its ninth straight Colonial League soccer title and completes a 22-0 regular season with a 3-0 win over Catasauqua in the tournament title match. The Spartans’ field hockey team also finishes a

22-0 regular season when Devon Searfoss’ overtime goal gives it a 2-1 win over Moravian Academy in the tournament final.

1995: Upper Perkiomen’s Kyheim Tripp runs for a school-record

351 yards on 33 carries, missing the Pioneer Athletic Conference mark by four yards, in a 35-0 win over Owen J. Roberts.

1986: After nearly 50 years, racing at Dorney Park comes to an end when Jerry Fried, who has promoted modified and latemodel stock-car races on asphalt oval since 1962, announces that the park’s owners and South Whitehall Township have come to an agreement to halt racing at the site.
