LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK
A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from Oct. 30.
1989: Muhlenberg (16-1), ranked second in NCAA Division III men’s soccer, receives its first-ever NCAA soccer tournament berth and will host Montclair in the first round of the regional. The Mules field hockey team, which won its first-ever Middle Atlantic Conference title over Elizabethtown, also receives an NCAA bid and will meet St. Lawrence in the first round at Bloomsburg. 1976: In a game dubbed the “Lehigh Valley Super Bowl,” unbeaten Whitehall turns five Dieruff turnovers into touchdowns and snaps the Huskies’ five-game shutout streak with a 33-0 East Penn Conference victory. The Zephyrs (7-0), who have won 13 straight games, get second-half interception returns from Rich Fetherholf (71 yards) and Andy Millen (44 yards) and a 2-yard fumble return from Mark Standorf to break open the game.
1964: George Kazakos and Werner Grabner score overtime goals to lead Bethlehem to a 2-0 soccer win over Southern Lehigh, capping another unbeaten season (12-0-0) for the Hurricanes. The win and perfect season extend coach Mike Buonassi’s career record to 71-1-2 in seven seasons.
