Hoyas hand Lafayette disappointing defeat

Leopards fall to 2-6

The concern for the Lafayette College football program was a letdown after the Leopards nearly upset highly-ranked Holy Cross last week. In the minds of most Patriot League football observers, Lafayette was favored to beat Georgetown Saturday at Fisher Stadium.

The Hoyas had other ideas. Senior quarterback Pierce Holley threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns and Georgetown ended a six-game losing streak with a 30-20 win.

The Hoyas (2-6, 1-3 Patriot League) built a 17-0 lead and never trailed. Lafayette (2-6, 1-2), closed to within 17-7 when Ah-Shaun Davis threw a 5-yard TD pass to Elijah Steward to reduce the deficit to 10 with 41 seconds before halftime.

Jaden Sutton scored on a 2-yard run to the cap to cut it to three with 10:38 left in the third, but the Hoyas extended the margin to 24-14 seven minutes later when Herman Moultrie III had a 3-yard TD run. The score was set up when Wedner Cadet intercepted a Davis pass and ran it back 26 yards to the Lafayette 3.

Georgetown extended its lead to 30-14 on a 49-yard pass from Holley to Jimmy Kibble with 11:04 left in the game. Lafayette answered with Rent Montie coming in at quarterback and throwing a 2-yard TD pass to Liberty High School product Dallas Holmes with 7:59 left but the Leopards would get no closer.

Joshua Tomas had 139 receiving yards on 12 receptions with a touchdown for Georgetown.

Davis threw for 74 yards and ran for 36 for Lafayette. In relief, Montie was 6-for-11 passing for 145 yards. Holmes had two catches for 32 yards.

“Making the switch at quarterback was just about trying to create a spark and Rent going in there created it,” Lafayette coach John Troxell said to the Lafayette Sports Network after the game. “He got the guys going and moving the ball down the field and he had some reads that we needed to make.”

Lafayette plays at Colgate and Fordham over the next two Saturdays before returning to Fisher Stadium on Nov. 19 to host Lehigh in the 158th meeting of college football’s most-played rivalry.

“We’re going to work every day,” Troxell said. “This is a young group and we’re going to get a bunch of these guys back. It’s about culture and creating a winning culture. When we show up next week, we’re going to go out to win. We’re in the same boat as the kids as a staff. We’re not giving up on them, and they’re not going to give up on us.”
