2011: Emmaus blanks Whitehall 2-0 for its 23rd straight District 11 Class 3A field hockey title.

1986: Stacie Reichard’s goal late in the first half gives Emmaus to a 1-0 win over Lower Dauphin and berth in the PIAA Class 3A field hockey semifinals. The victory is a schoolreco­rd 23rd for the Green Hornets. 1986: Citing a list of problems within the sport — including unscrupulo­us promoters, politics and outright lying — 37-year-old Larry Holmes announces his third retirement from boxing with a career 48-2 record. 1981: Larry Holmes survives a seventh-round knockdown to retain his WBC heavyweigh­t title with an 11th-round TKO of Renaldo Snipes before 14,103 in attendance at Pittsburgh’s Civic Arena. The “Easton Assassin” improves his record to 39-0.

1981: James Joseph runs for 206 yards and becomes Parkland’s all-time career rushing leader with over 2,800 yards in a 20-9 win over Northampto­n.

1976: Future New York Jet Bruce Harper runs for 187 yards in a

35-0 win over Mansfield to become Kutztown State College’s first 1,000-yard back.

1971: After losing a school-record seven games to open the season, Allen shocks Easton (6-3) 26-14 on three Mark Smith-to-Doug Snyder touchdown passes.

1971: Artie Owens sets the area’s single-season touchdown record with 33 by scoring six times in a 52-6 win over Slatington, the Mountainee­rs’ 10th straight win. Owens runs for 183 yards and four touchdowns on 12 carries, catches a pass for a touchdown and also returns a punt for a score. Pen Argyl’s Woody Petchel and Slatington’s Duke Lilly shared the previous mark of 30.
