Advent represents hope, peace, love and joy
We will be entering the Liturgical Season of Advent in the Christian church on Sunday, Nov. 27. An Advent wreath symbolizing eternal life and the four candles representing hope, peace, love and joy are observed in the four Advent Sundays which precede Christmas.
The word Advent itself derives from the Latin word, coming. The coming, or manifestation, of the Christ Child culminates on Christmas.
Some people might question why it is important to observe this season that is truly a spiritual preparation before Christmas. Well, it is a time to reflect through prayer and special commemorative music regarding the true meaning of Jesus’ birth.
Yes, preparing our homes with decorations and engaging in holiday festivities is appropriate indeed. However, without preparing our hearts as well as our homes, one can easily lose sight of the real meaning of the celebration.
We are apt to be impeded with the commercialism of Christmas which surrounds us through the merchants and media, to be sure.
During this Season may our hearts be ready to receive the Christ Child and may we all be enfolded in the love of God. Jacqueline L. Quigley
