LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK
A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from Nov. 20.
1987: In one of the most shocking upsets in local football history, Centennial League runner-up Lehighton (8-2-1) goes to Easton’s Cottingham Stadium and stops the unbeaten Red Rovers’ 19-game winning streak with a 12-0 win in the District 11 Class 3A championship game. Clayton “Skimmer”’ Andrews runs for 138 yards and both TDs while the Indians hold Easton to 163 total yards.
1982: Central Catholic grad Andy Baranek completes 20 of 38 passes for 241 yards and two TDs, and Dell Walker’s 2-yard TD run gives East Stroudsburg (9-2) a 24-22 victory at Edinboro in the PSAC state championship game.
1982: After four 20-minute quarters and nine five-minute OT periods, Neshaminy Langhorne’s
Scott Mertz ends the longest soccer game in PIAA history to that point with a goal in the 10th OT that gives the Redskins (20-0-4) a 2-1 victory over Fleetwood (32-3) and the Class 3A championship. The two teams play for two hours, eight minutes and 56 seconds.
