Singleton, Carter named to Freshman All-America Team

Penn State’s Nick Singleton and Abdul Carter have been named to the Football Writers’ Associatio­n of America Freshman All-America Team.

The 6-0, 219-pound Singleton led the Nittany Lions (11-2) in rushing with 1,061 yards, 15 off Saquon Barkley’s school record by a freshman, on 156 carries. He ran for 12 touchdowns, a school record by a freshman, and had one receiving TD and one kickoff return for a TD.

Singleton averaged 6.80 yards per carry, which ranked seventh in the Football Bowl Subdivisio­n. He finished seventh in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game with 81.6 and third in touchdowns with 14.

He led the Big Ten with nine runs of at least 30 yards and with seven runs of at least 40 yards.

Singleton earlier was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and was voted to the all-conference second team as a return specialist and to the third team as a running back.

In addition, he was named the Big Ten Newcomer of the Year by Associated Press and was chosen to Freshman All-America teams selected by ESPN, On3, 247Sports and College Football News.

He capped his season in Penn State’s 35-21 win over Utah in the Rose Bowl, carrying seven times for 120 yards and two touchdowns. His 87-yard run was the third-longest in Rose Bowl history and the second-longest in Penn State bowl history.

Singleton was named to the FWAA team as its all-purpose back and Carter as a linebacker.

The 6-3, 233-pound Carter became a Penn State starter in

midseason and ranked first or second on the team in sacks (6.5), forced fumbles (2), tackles (56), tackles for loss (10.5) and quarterbac­k hurries (5).

He also was selected to the ESPN, On3, 247Sports and College Football News All-America teams.

Transfer update: Penn State linebacker Jamari Buddin, a former four-star prospect from Ypsilanti, Mich., announced that he has placed his name in the NCAA transfer portal.

The 6-2, 216-pound Buddin played in four games as a true freshman in 2021 and in nine games this season, making eight

tackles. He had chosen to play for the Nittany Lions over Michigan and Minnesota.

Buddin’s decision came days after starting outside linebacker Curtis Jacobs announced that he will return for the 2023 season.

In other news, Penn State defensive lineman Fatoma Mulbah announced he has transferre­d to West Virginia.

The 6-3, 296-pound Mulbah, a former three-star prospect from Susquehann­a Township High School, was redshirted in 2020 before he played in six games in 2021 and all 13 games in 2022, including the Rose Bowl, as a reserve.
