Condomitti makes history

Konkrete Kid becomes District 11’s 12th four-time Class 3A regional champion

- By Tom Housenick

Dagen Condomitti saw an opening, one that was there in the first period of Saturday’s 152-pound Northeast Regional final against Bethlehem Catholic’s Jake Dailey.

The Northampton senior didn’t capitalize on it the first time, but he was all over it the next time.

“I was just trying to do a run-around his hip to get maybe a cradle but get two,” Condomitti said. “But his head ducked kind of low. I kept his head and went for the cradle.”

Condomitti got the cradle in 4 minutes, 57 seconds and made history.

He became District 11’s 12th four-time Class 3A regional champion, second in school history (Jeff Ecklof in 2000-03).

“I was thinking about it a lot this week,” Condomitti said of the accomplishment. “But once I got on the mat, I just was thinking about wrestling, focusing on it being just another match.”

Condomitti, who beat Dailey in the final for the second week in a row, was voted as the tournament’s outstanding wrestler for the second year in a row. He pinned Dailey in last year’s final, too.

Condomitti was one of four competitors to repeat a title from last week’s district event against the same foe. Bethlehem Catholic’s Nate Desmond (114), Freedom’s C.J. Horvath (121) and Parkland’s Adrian Gacek (189) were the others.

“Dagen is a special athlete,” Northampton coach first-year

Joe Provini said. “He is one of the fittest wrestlers I’ve ever coached. I don’t even know who you can compare him to. He’s uniquely Dagen on the mat.

“I’m proud of him. I’m happy I got to be part of the most recent one. But he’s got to be better next week, and he knows that.”

Provini was an assistant at Nazareth the last time someone won four regional crowns (Sammy Sasso in 2018).

Bethlehem Catholic bounced back from a shaky morning session to claim the team title with 231.5 points, 10 better than Nazareth, which won seven of eight semifinals and six of seven finals.

“This sport definitely brings out the best of you and the worst in you,” Golden Hawks coach Jeff Karam said. “We definitely had to do some soul-searching.

“I’ll never make excuses for my wrestlers but a couple of our guys got hit with the bug. But there’s no excuses. You have to perform. No one cares about that.”

Nazareth’s Sean Kinney could be the next to win four regional titles. He decked LaSalle’s Andrew Brennan in 92 seconds for the 285-pound championship.

Desmond and fellow Bethlehem Catholic sophomore Kollin Rath (139) won their second regional titles in dominating fashion.

Bethlehem Catholic freshman sensation Keanu Dillard dominated Abington Heights’ two-time state medalist Luke Sirianni 8-0 in the 107 final. Dillard’s five-point move in the second period opened things up. He added another takedown in the third and smothered Sirianni the rest of the way.

Desmond started fast at 114 with a seven-point first period against Northampton’s Carson Wagner, including three backs at the edge of the mat just before the buzzer, and cruised to an 8-1 win.

Horvath beat Northampton’s Trey Wagner for the second week in a row at 121, this time 4-2.

Rath recorded 12 takedowns in 3:28 for a technical fall at 139.
