2006: Upper Perkiomen 119-pounder Chris Steele catches Nazareth’s Andrew Flegler with a “flying headlock” in the final four seconds, giving him a 13-5 major decision in the match’s final bout and the Indians a dramatic 27-26 win in the PIAA Class 3A Team Wrestling championship semifinals. Later, the Indians hammer Easton 46-19 to claim their first state team title. Easton qualified for its sixth straight championship berth by beating Penn Trafford 38-19 in the other semifinal. Nazareth bounces back to edge Bald Eagle Area 28-25 for third.
2006: Northern Lehigh’s bid for a third straight PIAA Class 2A Team Wrestling championship ends in a 38-19 loss to Reynolds in the championship match. The Bulldogs had reached the finals with a 45-12 win over Boiling Springs. Northwestern finishes fourth after a 33-27 loss to Mount Pleasant in the consolation final. 2005: Doug Weaver scores 21 of his 23 points in the first half and Matt Gorden adds 14 of his 16 in the second to lead Notre Dame past Northern Lehigh 79-55 and to the Crusaders’ first boys basketball Colonial League championship.
2000: Saucon Valley becomes the second boys basketball team to finish 18-0 in the Colonial League since it expanded in 19941995 by beating Salisbury 67-48. 1995: Wins by Rick Hepp and Steve Casady (his 100th) help Lehigh beat Penn State 17-14 and end a 13-year losing streak to the Nittany Lions.
1981: Marian Catholic ends its girls basketball regular season with a 24-5 record after a 71-47 win over Freeland.
1966: Phillipsburg limits Skip Kintz to just nine points but Dieruff gets 24 points from Danny O’Donnell and scores 59 points in the second half in a 91-27 rout, the Huskies’ 12th straight league win.
