LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK

- A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from Feb. 18.

2011: Central Catholic uses a stifling defense to defeat Nazareth 26-25 at Freedom High School to secure its fourth straight Lehigh Valley Conference girls basketball crown.

1996: Phillipsbu­rg rolls past High Point (35-21) and Brick Township (42-15) to win its ninth New Jersey Group 3 state dual-meet wrestling championsh­ip.

1976: Whitehall lineman Gary Wagner and Parkland defensive back Brian Kistler each sign letters of intent to play football at Penn State.

1971: Muhlenberg’s Bob McClure scores a schoolreco­rd 44 points in an 87-74 win at Franklin & Marshall.

1971: Central Catholic names Lehigh grad Walt King to succeed George Kinek as football coach. King, who led Becahi to a 10-0 record in 1967, produces an unbeaten season at Central (10-0) a year later.

1971: After ending long winning streaks by Phillipsbu­rg and Saucon Valley during the season, Liberty completes a 12-0 wrestling campaign and locks up the East Penn League title with a 29-11 win over Freedom.

1966: Dieruff ’s 13-game East Penn League winning streak ends when Hazleton stalls its way to a 30-28, double-overtime victory. The Huskies play the final 11:25 without high-scoring Skip Kintz, who is ejected after being called for a flagrant foul with 5:25 left in regulation, which ended in a 21-21 tie.

1966: In one of the longest boys basketball games in Lehigh Valley history, Wilson gets 22 points from Ron Lauer and shoots 37-for-51 from the foul line to outlast Nazareth in six overtimes for a 97-91 Lehigh-Northampto­n League victory.

1961: Allen’s Joe Brey sets records in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley to capture two of the Canaries’ five gold medals as they beat out the other six teams to win the District 11 swimming title for the 27th straight year — every year the event has been held.

1956: Temple (19-1) uses a late 14-0 run to erase a 63-52 deficit and snaps Lafayette’s 11-game winning streak with a 66-65 victory over the Leopards (16-5) before 3,000 fans at Alumni Gym on College Hill.
