March community programs at Jacobsburg

Jacobsburg Environmen­tal Education Center, 400 Belfast Road, Bushkill Township, will offer the following community programs:

Family Science Night: What’s in a nest?: 6:30-7:30 p.m. March 8. Nesting season is starting for birds in our area and no nest is the same. Learn about the different courting and nest building strategies that various types of birds use. Start off the evening by trying to observe the amazing courtship display of the Timberdood­le. Meet out front of the visitor center promptly at 6:30 p.m. so that you don’t miss this fleeting dusk display that many call the “sky dance.” Once it gets dark head inside to examine examples of nests before attempting to make your own. This program is best for families with children ages 5 and up.

Hike for Health: 5:30-7 p.m. March 13. Get moving after work with a brisk hike. The guided monthly hikes are two to three miles over uneven terrain. You must be able to maintain a hiking pace of two miles per hour to attend. Dogs are welcome to hike on a leash. Meet at the Visitor Center flagpole at 400 Belfast Road. This monthly hiking program will repeat on April 10, May 1, June 5, July 10, Aug. 14, Sept. 4, and Oct. 2 at the same time and place. Registrati­on is not required. Volunteer Recruitmen­t Event: 7-8:30 p.m. March 15. After a chance to observe the mating flights of American woodcocks, they will gather in the center for some hot cocoa and learn the process of becoming a volunteer, reporting hours, and ways you can help the park.

Exploring Eclipses: 2-3 p.m. March 16 and 10-11 a.m. March 20. On April 8 portions of North America will experience a total solar eclipse and Pennsylvan­ia is lucky enough to be in the path of totality. If you are planning to view the eclipse or are interested in learning about eclipses, join Exploring Eclipses to learn about the history of eclipses, what an eclipse is, how to safely view an eclipse and what to expect on the day of the eclipse.

Tumbling Timberdood­les: 6:30-8 p.m. March 16. The ‘sky dance’ or courtship display of the American Woodcock is a spectacle which has historical­ly been known to take place at Jacobsburg each year. This program will cover some of the interestin­g biology of the American Woodcock followed by a quiet meander at sunset as you look and listen for these twirling courtship flights.

Weekly Weeders: 8:30-10:30 a.m. March 28. Interested in learning more about gardening with native plants? Volunteer to mulch, pull weeds, divide plants, and amend soil in the center’s native plant garden 8:30-10:30 a.m. every Thursday morning. Instructio­n, tools, and weeding mats provided.

Hike for Health: Special Excursion!: 5:30-7 p.m. April 3. Get moving after work with a brisk hike guided by a Jacobsburg educator. This is a special excursion hike that will take participan­ts to Wayne A. Grube Park to hike on the Nor-Bath Trail in honor of Northampto­n County Parks 50th Anniversar­y. Join the hike to explore one of the many trails that Northampto­n County Parks has to offer and how trail connection­s can enhance communitie­s. These guided monthly hikes are two to three miles over uneven terrain. You must be able to maintain a hiking pace of two miles per hour to attend. Dogs are welcome to hike on a leash. Meet at 1200 Willowbroo­k Road, Allen Township. Registrati­on is not required. Join the email reminder list by contacting us at 610-746-2801 or jacobsburg­sp@ pa.gov.
