Braves place All-Star catcher Murphy on IL

-

The Braves placed All-Star catcher Sean Murphy on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a strained left oblique muscle.

The Braves added catcher Chadwick Tromp to the major league roster. Tromp will serve as Travis d’Arnaud’s backup while Murphy is out. D’Arnaud batted eighth in Saturday’s game against the Phillies.

Murphy was injured Friday on a swing in the seventh inning of the Braves’ 9-3 win over the Phillies in the season opener. He was a first-time All-Star last season.

“I hate it for him. One of those freak things that happen in baseball,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said.

Auto racing: Kyle Larson turned a fast lap at 120.332 mph on Saturday to win the pole position for Sunday night’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway. Larson, the defending race winner, edged Hendrick teammate Chase Elliott for his first pole of the season.

Horse racing: After more than 40 years, Macao’s horse racing track hosted its final races on Saturday, bringing an end to the sport in the city famous for its massive casinos. In January, the city’s government said it would terminate its contract with the Macao Jockey Club in April. The decision came at the request of the Macao Horse Race Company, which cited operational challenges as part of the reasons for the closure.

Soccer: Aston Villa and Tottenham didn’t give up an inch in their fight for fourth place in the English Premier League on Saturday. Battling for Champions League soccer next season, both clubs won games as the league resumed following the international break. Villa in fourth and Spurs in fifth remain separated by just three points. Tottenham, which has a match in hand, kept the pressure on Villa when a late goal from Son Heung-min sealed a 2-1 win over Luton. Villa restored its lead barely two hours later by defeating Wolverhampton 2-0.
