CVS Pharmacy on Monday acquired the 42-year-old Young's Pharmacy in Bethlehem Township, leading the owner of Young's and some of its employees to take positions with the drugstore chain.

All pharmacy files, insurance information and pharmacy inventory were transferred from Young's Pharmacy to the nearby CVS Pharmacy at 4950 Freemansburg Ave. in Bethlehem Township, CVS spokeswoman Amy Lanctot said in a written statement.

Patients of Young's Pharmacy are now able to pick up, drop off and refill their prescriptions at either the Bethlehem Township CVS Pharmacy or another location at 2651 Easton Ave. in Bethlehem.

Young's Pharmacy owner Jeannette Young has joined the CVS Pharmacy team, along with several other former Young's Pharmacy employees, Lanctot said.

“CVS Pharmacy and the owner of Young's Pharmacy are working together to ensure that the transition will be simple for patients and that their access to pharmacy care is not interrupted,” Lanctot said.

When determining whether or not to purchase a pharmacy, CVS consider several factors, including proximity to other pharmacies in the area and existing customer base, Lanctot said.

“We considered those same factors when deciding to purchase Young's Pharmacy,” she added. “We are always looking for opportunities to expand our customer base … so acquisitions like this take place on occasion.”

CVS Pharmacy offers clinical pharmacy services, medication adherence programs, automatic refills to help patients take their medications on time and as directed, immunizations, text alerts to inform patients when their prescriptions are ready, and digital tools to help patients manage their prescriptions, Lanctot said.

Patients and customers who are new to CVS will be introduced to CVS Pharmacy ExtraCare Program, a rewards program that provides customers with ExtraBucks and offers that are earned by shopping in-store or at cvs.com.

Young's Pharmacy at 3708 Freemansburg Ave. had been a familyowned, independent pharmacy since 1976, according to its website.

The family operated a drugstore for 37 years at Ninth and Northampton streets in Easton. It was sold in 1993 to the now-defunct Fay's drug chain. There is now a Rite Aid at the corner.

It is unclear what will happen to the Bethlehem Township property, which houses a second-floor yoga studio.

CVS did not purchase the property, Lanctot said.
