There’s an open seat on Macungie borough council now that a long-absent member resigned.

Marvin Moyer’s resignation was submitted to the council Feb. 18, said council President Chris Becker.

Council members at their Feb. 4 meeting asked for Moyer, 75, to quit because he missed 64 out of 78 regular and special council meetings over the first three years of his term. The council isn’t able to remove one of its own members.

Supporters of the motion, including Becker, said they wanted voters to know about Moyer’s attendance record and that his absence was felt during votes and meetings where they needed to reach a quorum. He was also collecting the $1,000 annual paycheck that comes with a council seat.

“I respect the decision that he made and I’m thankful that he made that decision so that we didn’t have to continue,” Becker said. “[The vote] wasn’t to disgrace anyone, we just needed a full contingent of council.”

Several borough officials previously said Moyer has health issues.

He could not be reached for comment.

Borough officials are accepting applicants for Moyer’s seat, which expires at the end of the year.

His four-year term is one of three on the seven-member council that’s up for election this year.

Interested applicants can send a letter of interest to the Borough of Macungie, 21 Locust Street, Macungie, PA 18062.

Applicants must have lived in the borough for at least one year prior to their appointment. Applications are due by 4 p.m. March 13.

Candidates will be interviewed, and one appointed, at a council meeting on March 18.
