The Morning Call

Experience + Technology = Enhanced Vision

-

Clear vision is a target we all strive for, and now with continuing advancements in cataract technology, highly trained professionals use many tools to precisely pinpoint treatment for a wide range of eye conditions.

Born and raised in the Lehigh Valley, Marnie O’Brien, D.O., has been dedicated to optimizing her patients’ visual outcomes by providing them with surgical alternatives in order to see the world clearly. For over 20 years, she has been providing patients throughout the Lehigh Valley and surrounding area with professional, compassionate eye care.

To provide both the physician and patient with every advantage, Dr. Marnie O’Brien, partner at the Lehigh Valley Eye Center, utilizes the latest technology for diagnosis and treatment.

Patients in need of cataract surgery have a new ally: a technology called ORA Veri-Eye that allows surgeons like Dr. O’Brien to take intraoperative measurements to ensure the most accurate lens selection. Dr. O’Brien, explains, “ORA works by taking a measurement of the eye at the time of surgery, once the cataract has been removed. The technology analyzes the patients’ visual pathway and gives us realtime guidance. This increased information is used to optimize decision making when choosing what strength and type of new lens to implant.”

Dr. O’Brien notes, “This technology is particularly helpful in patients with previous LASIK or Refractive Corneal surgery.” ORA adds just a few extra minutes to the time of cataract surgery, and there is no increased recovery time. Dr. O’Brien also utilizes the femtosecond laser. “This technology has the potential to increase accuracy, decrease surgical time and improve visual results,” she says.

No matter how accurate manual cataract surgeries were in the past, the femtosecond laser adds a level of precision. Tested in clinical trials, the laser achieved unprecedented accuracy with few adverse effects. When these new technologies are employed along with the most advanced intraocular lenses, visual outcomes are optimized.

Dr. O’Brien also continues to utilize Multifocal Lenses, which she reports, “are a great choice for cataract patients who still drive, work or enjoy various hobbies, because these IOLs provide clarity simultaneously for multiple depths of field.” In many cases, it eliminates the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses after surgery.

With all of the recent advances in cataract technologies, now is a great time to move forward with surgery. Dr. O’Brien has over 20 years of experience in cataract and refractive surgery, and is a pioneer in bringing the newest technologies to the Lehigh Valley.
