Widening Route 22
Regional planners have already started working to widen Route 22 between 15th Street and Airport Road, and new plans would look to widen it between Airport Road and Route 512. The two projects would improve the congested heart of the Lehigh Valley’s busiest artery.
PennDOT wanted to widen other parts of the highway before 2040, but those high-priced projects look unlikely to be funded any time soon. PennDOT proposed spending a total of $801.1 million to widen Route 22 between Route 512 and Route 33 and from Route 309 to 15th Street, but they were left off the draft.
