Sched­ul­ing pa­ram­e­ters

The In­ter­na­tional League, like other mi­nor league or­ga­ni­za­tions, has a list of pa­ram­e­ters the group at Johns Hopkins and its su­per com­puter must con­sider when creat­ing the next sea­son’s sched­ule. Here are those for the IL: 1. Pro­tected dates (lo­cal teams re­quest be­ing on the road for In­di­anapo­lis 500, Ken­tucky Derby, ACC men’s bas­ket­ball tour­na­ment, Nor­folk’s Har­bor­fest) 2. All 14 teams must have the same num­ber of Fri­day-Satur­day-Sun­day home dates (IronPigs have 11 in 2020) 3. Teams must al­ter­nate open­ing each sea­son at home (IronPigs open on the road in 2020) 4. Each team must be home ei­ther July 3 or July 4 to cel­e­brate this coun­try’s in­de­pen­dence (IronPigs are home July 3 in 2020) 5. Two-game and 10-game se­ries are not pre­ferred (IronPigs have a pair of two-game se­ries and no 10-game home­s­tands in 2020) 6. ‘Candy strip­ing’ (seven games at home then seven games on the road) is pre­ferred 7. Mon­day off days pre­ferred for travel (eight of nine IronPigs off days in 2020 are Mon­days) 8. Travel city part­ners (teams come to Le­high Val­ley and Scran­ton/Wilkes-Barre, Gwin­nett and Char­lotte, Durham and Nor­folk, etc. for con­sec­u­tive trips)
