Police say car owner, neighborhood residents stopped theft of vehicle
A 34-year-old man tried to make off with a car on Jordan Street in Allentown on Friday, but the car’s owner and several neighborhood residents stopped him and held him until police arrived, according to court records.
Ruben Ortiz, of the 400 block of Hamilton Street in Allentown, was taken into custody and charged with theft, receiving stolen property, unauthorized use of an automobile and driving with a suspended license.
Police say Ortiz also was wanted for a May crash in Whitehall Township where he was suspected of drunken driving.
Ortiz was arraigned by District Judge Tom Creighton and was sent to Lehigh County Jail under $26,000 bail for both cases.
According to a criminal complaint:
Raymond Febrez parked his car at 6:21 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of North Jordan Street and quickly ran into his house. The car was off, but Febrez left the keys inside.
Moments later, Ortiz entered the car and started to drive off, but Febrez chased after him.
Febrez caught up to the car when it stalled, but Ortiz started it again and crashed into two parked cars.
Several neighbors who were outside helped Febrez stop and detain Ortiz until police arrived.
