Po­lice say car owner, neigh­bor­hood res­i­dents stopped theft of ve­hi­cle

A 34-year-old man tried to make off with a car on Jor­dan Street in Al­len­town on Fri­day, but the car’s owner and sev­eral neigh­bor­hood res­i­dents stopped him and held him un­til po­lice ar­rived, ac­cord­ing to court records.

Ruben Or­tiz, of the 400 block of Hamilton Street in Al­len­town, was taken into cus­tody and charged with theft, re­ceiv­ing stolen prop­erty, unau­tho­rized use of an au­to­mo­bile and driv­ing with a sus­pended li­cense.

Po­lice say Or­tiz also was wanted for a May crash in White­hall Town­ship where he was sus­pected of drunken driv­ing.

Or­tiz was ar­raigned by District Judge Tom Creighton and was sent to Le­high County Jail un­der $26,000 bail for both cases.

Ac­cord­ing to a crim­i­nal com­plaint:

Ray­mond Fe­brez parked his car at 6:21 p.m. Fri­day in the 500 block of North Jor­dan Street and quickly ran into his house. The car was off, but Fe­brez left the keys in­side.

Mo­ments later, Or­tiz en­tered the car and started to drive off, but Fe­brez chased af­ter him.

Fe­brez caught up to the car when it stalled, but Or­tiz started it again and crashed into two parked cars.

Sev­eral neigh­bors who were out­side helped Fe­brez stop and de­tain Or­tiz un­til po­lice ar­rived.
